Measure the hanging height from the tabletop to the bottom of the fixture. Size and center the layout from the table, not from the center of the room.

Why this fits

Size the fixture for the table, island, or area directly below it.

For an island or table, use the surface below as your main reference. Check the fixture width, spacing, and sightlines together.

Start with equal clearance at both ends, then confirm the actual shade diameter.

Installation readiness

From unboxing to final installation

Use this checklist before ordering and share the product-specific details with your installer.

01

Confirm the fixture

Check the overall dimensions, canopy, voltage, bulb base, maximum bulb wattage, dimmer compatibility, cord or rod length, and sloped-ceiling compatibility.

02

Check the location

Make sure the electrical box can support the fixture's weight, check all walking and furniture clearances, and confirm that the fixture is rated for the exact dry, damp, or wet location.

03

Share details with your installer

Before installation day, share the product page, wiring diagram, ceiling material, circuit details, desired hanging length (ceiling to bottom of fixture), and final mounting marks.

04

Inspect and test

Confirm that the fixture is level and securely mounted, that all clearance and bulb wattage requirements are met, that switching and dimming work properly, and that no cord or hardware is under strain.

Safety first: Hardwired fixtures should be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with the product instructions and local electrical code. Turn power off at the breaker and verify it is off before electrical work. Product-specific ratings always take precedence over general guidance.

Common questions

Before you order

General guidance helps narrow down your options. Always confirm the exact product before installation.

How large should my chandelier be?

For an open room, add the room length and width in feet and use that number as an approximate fixture diameter in inches. Over a rectangular table, start with a fixture about 50-67% of the table length. For a round table, use the tabletop diameter; for a square table, use the tabletop width.

How low should pendants hang over a kitchen island?

A common starting range is 30-36 inches from the countertop to the bottom of the pendant. Adjust for sightlines, fixture shape, and the heights of the people in your home.

How many pendants should I use over an island?

Compare a linear fixture, two pendants, and three pendants using the island's actual dimensions. The planner checks common 12-, 16-, and 20-inch shade sizes. The best layout depends on the actual shade diameter, equal clearance at both ends, and the space between the widest parts of the shades.

Can I use a chandelier with an 8-foot ceiling?

Use a compact chandelier only when it preserves at least 7 feet of headroom. A flush or semi-flush fixture is usually a more practical starting point.

What color temperature works best at home?

2700-3000K (warm white) usually feels comfortable in living, dining, and sleeping areas. Kitchens, bathrooms, and offices often benefit from 3000-3500K (warm to neutral white).

Can every pendant be installed on a sloped ceiling?

No. Check the specific product canopy, cord or rod system, permitted angle, and installation instructions before ordering.

Do I need a qualified electrician?

Hardwired fixtures should be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with the product instructions and local electrical code.

Care & maintenance

Material Care & Maintenance

Practical guidance to protect the character, finish, and performance of every Merge light fixture.

Find your material
Artful composition of glass, brass, fabric, travertine, marble, woven cane, shell, and ceramic.

Essential first steps

Before you begin

  1. 01Turn off power at the wall switch and circuit breaker before cleaning.
  2. 02Allow the fixture and light bulb to cool completely.
  3. 03Never spray liquid directly onto a fixture.
  4. 04Keep moisture away from electrical parts, joints, and adhesives.
  5. 05Contact a licensed electrician or qualified installer for hardwired, high, heavy, or fragile fixtures.

Care library

Find your material

Search by material, finish, or component. If you are unsure, dust with a clean, dry cloth only.

40 materials

Across every material

Begin gently. Stop early.

Do

  • Start with a clean, soft, dry cloth or brush.
  • Support removable parts before loosening any hardware.
  • Apply any approved cleaner to the cloth, never directly to the fixture.
  • Dry every surface fully before reconnecting power.

Avoid

  • Abrasive pads, powders, and eraser-style cleaning sponges.
  • Bleach, ammonia, acids, alcohol, and solvents.
  • Metal polish unless Merge explicitly approves it.
  • Steam, soaking and moisture near electrical parts.
Brushed unlacquered brass transitioning naturally into a deeper patina beneath hand-blown glass.

Natural character

Designed to age beautifully

Handmade glass, natural stone, wood, leather, and uncoated metals naturally vary from piece to piece. Small bubbles, veining, wood grain, color variation, and patina make each fixture unique.

Expected variation

Subtle color changes, natural inclusions, patina, and small differences created by hand finishing.

Care questions

Good to know

For product-specific instructions, always follow the installation guide included with the fixture.

How often should I clean a light fixture?

Frequent light dusting is safer than occasional deep cleaning. Check exposed surfaces monthly, and clean only when you see dust or fingerprints.

Can I remove glass to clean it?

Remove glass only when the product guide explains how and you can support it safely. Have a qualified installer handle large, heavy, or overhead glass.

Can I clean a fabric shade with water?

Start with a dry brush or a vacuum on low suction. Water can affect the outer fabric, lining, trim, and adhesives differently, even when the fabric appears washable.

Should I clean the bulb?

Turn off power, allow the light bulb to cool, and follow the bulb manufacturer's instructions. Never apply liquid to a bulb while it is installed.

What if the fixture is difficult to reach?

Do not overreach or lean on the fixture. Contact a qualified professional for fixtures that are high, large, heavy, or difficult to access.

What if I cannot identify the finish?

Dust with a clean, dry cloth only. Send Merge the product name and a clear photo before using water, cleaner, or polish.
